Why the H1 matters

The H1 is the headline of the page. Search engines weigh it heavily when working out what the page is about, and it should describe the page clearly and include the term people search for. A missing H1 leaves that signal blank; several H1s split it.

For accessibility, screen-reader users navigate by headings, and a single, clear H1 followed by a logical H2 and H3 structure lets them understand and jump around the page. A page with no H1 or a jumble of them is far harder to navigate.

How to fix H1 problems

Aim for one descriptive H1 per page, then a nested structure below it:

• Missing H1: add a single H1 that states the page topic, usually the visible page title.
• Multiple H1s: keep the one true headline as H1 and demote the others to H2 or H3. Page builders and themes sometimes wrap section titles in H1 by default, so check your template.
• Do not skip levels: follow H1 with H2, then H3, rather than jumping straight to H3 for styling reasons.
